Lennon once described an incident during his childhood where a mysterious man threw a ball into the steam of a passing train and repeated something along the lines of “Whoever retrieves this ball will be world famous”.
According to Lennon, the other boys hesitated while he ran into the steam and caught the ball. Lennon later reflected on this story as a fateful moment, almost a self-fulfilling prophecy, connecting it to his eventual fame with the Beatles.
There’s no confirmed identity for the man or if he even existed at all. But the story lingered in Lennon’s mind, and fans tend to see it as a foreshadowing.
